Chapter Eight

Chase followed the lavender girl, in her colorful swirling skirt from one end of the vendors’ booths, all the way to the other end. Voices filled the air, along with the scents of food, sweat, and perfume. When Faye brushed close to him, lavender with a hint of orange hit him, sending his mind reeling.

While she explored a jewelry booth, Chase wandered over to a plant stand. There were two kinds of berry bushes he was interested in, but should he keep increasing the garden? What if the farm did end up being sold? He’d never be able to pay whatever the asking price was. Especially after how his savings was being drained by his mother’s rehab expenses.

He was just about to walk away when a flat of four-inch lavender pots caught his attention. Chase ran his fingers through the stems, then bent to take a sniff. There were no buds yet, but the plant held a faint scent of Faye. He lifted one of the containers, wondering what kind these were. Only certain types did well in the hot Texas weather. He’d done a bit of research ever since Faye told him lavender was too difficult to grow.

“Got those off a farm in north Texas. A lavender farm,” said the older gentleman wearing a cap with a bass on the front. He looked like the type that enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Had Chase heard right? “A lavender farm?”

“That’s right. There’s a few around the state. Their festivals draw nice crowds with their offers of inexpensive plants and the homemade lavender goods they serve in their shops.” He scratched at the back of his neck, bronze from being out in the sun and speckled with short white hairs. “You know, those fancy soaps and smelly things. My wife loves buying them and stuffing them in my underwear drawer. As if I want to go around with my backside smelling like flowers.” He shook his head, grinning.

A lavender farm. Wouldn’t Faye love that?

She did love the herbs growing by the back door and had nearly plucked some of them free of leaves. He’d decided to add more herbs to his garden. There was a nice little spot next to the barn....

Had he lost his mind? There was no future with the lavender girl. She was here temporarily.

Besides, Heath would have a conniption if he knew Chase was having such thoughts about his daughter. He’d felt the poke of that cane a time or two when he’d annoyed the old man, but Chase had no desire to suffer a beating with it.

Plus, there was the fact that once Heath was gone, she would probably leave, too, if she even lasted that long. Soon after, the farm would be sold off to someone else, because nobody in the Michaels family would give it to any of Thelma’s brats. His mother had pretty much been disowned by those still living.

His gaze traveled to where Faye was now examining a booth of lamps made from solar lights.
